At the same time, other forces — including sweeping efficiency initiatives at the federal level and the explosion of innovative technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) — are compelling state and local agencies to rethink operations. More than 700 bills related to AI use were introduced in more than 40 state legislatures in 2024.6 Thirty states have also issued guidance on AI,7 indicating how quickly the technology is becoming integral to public service.
