Associations were never meant to be sales engines. They were built as member- and mission-driven organizations, structured to serve a profession, advance an industry or convene a community. As membership and dues models shifted, generating non-dues revenue became essential to supporting both the mission and the community, and the commercial side of the business developed alongside that need.
