Fixed wireless access, or FWA, is an efficient, reliable and cost-effective wireless networking technology. It replaces wired broadband networks with radio links to establish high-speed broadband connectivity for subscribers. 5G FWA offers an experience similar to fiber optics within a range of several miles and speeds of up to a few gigabytes. Despite some misconceptions, FWA isn’t Wi-Fi, but it is a type of wireless technology. FWA provides higher-speed network connectivity over longer ranges with a different deployment model and use cases than Wi-Fi. Unlike how wired broadband uses traditional network cables, such as copper wires, coaxial cables or optical fibers, FWA uses customer premises equipment (CPE) that provides network connectivity to a single premises. The term fixed still applies to FWA, even though it’s a wireless technology, because the transmitter and receiver operate at fixed locations. The placement of CPE is also stationary on premises.
